Today I have emailed a number of music publishers ranging from fairly small companies to some larger ones. Many of the larger publishers (often associated with famous record labels) will not accept unsolicited material (music business lawyers are usually required for this) so I have left these alone for the time being. I have asked for their feedback on my work with full disclosure that this is an academic project but hope at least some of them might be interested in what I d
A few days of talking and developing ideas with the excellent academics Dr Steve Parker and Dr Tom Attah has given me lots of food for though.... 1) Quality Control - I will attempt to get to the bottom of the processes employed at Motown & PWL. Some research for this includes watching the film Standing In The Shadows Of Motown and reading Phil Harding's PWL From The Factory Floor. 2) Psychology - I will attempt to understand what really sells a song to a listener starting wi
Some very important feedback coming from both legendary producer Phil Harding and up-and-coming producer Jo Webb telling me that getting face-to-face with top-liners is better than doing everything on-line. I am hoping to do a few tracks (or at least initial ideas) face-to-face for comparison. watch this space. Also emailed top-liners on current projects last night to progress attention. More tracks will come quickly under production focus so I can get them into song form and
Time to shape these ideas into something that makes sense. Merely just throwing a title at top-liners with sometimes just a hint of meaning/direction gives quite a few disparate threads that don't always converge. I am trying to sew these together and here is what I have so far for with a jumble of melodic and lyrical ideas - enjoy Controversial! (I’ll) move on through Past the point of being mad at you Beyond the tragedy of this abuse (oo-ooh) It ain’t the way So if you (rea
My top-liners have been hard at work again. I need to introduce you to Anna, Kelvin & James. More details to follow on these guys but once again they have fired back lots of excellent melodies. At this stage I am looking for hooks and I have already started to pick the bits I love out. Next step is me trying to arrange lots of 'bits' into something solid that I will expand into a song. Interesting that my initial 'stimuli' sent to the top-liners, have come back at me as furth
Just sent out a package of 4 track ideas to my top-line team! I'm excited to get some responses back but also this buys me a few days to get on top of other parts of the project so more research and planning ahead! You can hear latest versions of the tracks sent to top-liners on the website's player.
I've put 2 new tracks on the website music player today. Both of today's track's are quite derivative, but I hope they are inspirational for the top-liners and the arrangement and production can be significantly changed with the melody inb place. 'Bang Power' mixes influences of Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj's 'Bang Bang' with Little Mix's 'Power' and definitely needs a better working title! '(Too) Close For Comfort' is influenced by Clean Bandit's 'Rather Be' and a
Talking to more potential team members over the next few days! Also been trying to put a track together that's somewhere between Bang Bang by Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj and Power by Little Mix. Difficult to write minimal sections without any vocals and not quite there but feeling positive!
More calls, more people. Got a sound designer/programmer interested, and up and coming producer/mix engineer and hoping I can bag the service of another legendary mix engineer tomorrow. Also put a few emails together to speak to professionals who might be able to feedback on the tracks as part of my quality control systems. These posts are getting rather vague without names so I will get permissions and update the site with a list of those confirmed contributors ASAP. Now ba
So today saw me beginning to build a team around my top-liners as well touching bases with some of the top-liners for a progress report. I now have some highly talented new team members. A programmer and guitarist have been recruited and I am hoping to talk to 2 potential mix engineers by the end of the week. I am also working on creating 4 new loop ideas (stimuli) to again hit up the top-liners and start those creative juices flowing again! So far I have the initial idea 'A
